Motorcycle riders attack police station in Douala

On Wednesday night, motorcycle riders attacked a police station in 9th District, Douala and reportedly beat up the Safety Commissioner of the station after they installed a barrier on the highway to prevent the movement of cars.

The police responded by firing shots in the air and arresting some of the protesters. The rift between the riders and the police was reportedly started when, “the police car took away bikes deemed badly parked. The Benskineurs (motorcycle taxi drivers), felt that this was abuse. So they reacted violently to try to recover their bikes", said a witness to the scene.

This riot comes two months after the government launched a campaign to control disorganization caused by motorcycle riders around the capital city, Douala.

Faced with the violent reaction of the motorcycle riders, the Governor of the Littoral Region,
Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua, announced the suspension of the campaign via a signed statement.
